1960's best selling records & books - plus a review of the best on Radio in 1960.
daily OESP review of 1960's records. It rightly observes the demise of Carnaval tunes which since the early 1930s would flood the air waves and the hit parade. Carnaval tunes were all recorded by November and released in early December to be played on radio stations all over the country. By mid-January everyone knew which ones were their favourite and sang and danced to them during the festivities.
By the second half of the 1950s there were fewer and fewer Carnaval hits even though record companies kept up the production.
Then, in 1960, as if to belie the whole dying process, there were two Carnalval tunes that reached the top of the charts: 'Ó Crides', written by João de Barro, sung by TV comedian Ronald Golias and 'Me dá um dinheiro aí', sung by Moacyr Franco, yet another TV comedian who would turn into a balladeer in a couple of years.
'Me dá um dinheiro aí' turned out to be the last Carnaval tune to hit Number One ever.
The columnist also notices the dearth of good recordings during 1960, electing Palmeira's 'Perdão para dois' sung by new-comer Leila Silva and Carlos José's 'Esmeralda' as the best singles of the 1960.
