João de Barro's 'Eu vou p'ra farra' as recorded by Agrippina, who operated from Sao Paulo instead of Rio de Janeiro as it was usual in the late 1920s & early 1930s; Agrippina's portrait on the right.
'Favella' written by Roberto Martins & Waldemar Silva was recorded on 20 April 1936, by Francisco Alves. According to Miguel Nirez, Brazilian Black soldiers who fought in Guerra dos Canudos returned to civilian life with no place to dwell as they had been slaves before the War. They assembled near Morro da Providência, in Rio de Janeiro and decided to build shacks for their families on the side of this hill which reminded them of the Canudos region where there was a similar one with a favelleira tree (Cnidoscolus phyllancatus). After getting permission from the War Ministry they went ahead and called the makeshift settlement Favella.

'Na casa do 'seu' Thomaz' by Nássara & J. Cascata with Dyrcinha Baptista, released in 1933: 'Juramento falso' aka 'Foi uma pedra que rolou' with Sylvio Caldas, released in February 1939.
'Ganga' toada-rumba written by Lamartine Babo and recorded by Carlos Galhardo on 1st July 1937; magazine Ritmos no.6 - August 1949 with Os Vocalistas Tropicais on the cover.
'Jurei mas fracassei' (J.Cascata & A.Almeida) recorded by Orlando Silva on 2nd July 1937; Orlando Silva records 'Historia antiga' on 1st December 1938.
Max Bulhões & Milton de Oliveira's 'Não tenho lagrimas' is seen as a 'sad song' (judging by its cover) whereas in the USA it was seen as a basically happy song: 'Come to the Mardi Gras'.
'Lalá e Lélé' with Luiz Barbosa recorded on 24 April 1937; 'Manolita' recorded by Vicente Celestino on 14 April 1943.

'Morena, boca de ouro' was recorded on 4 July 1941 and released in September.
