Carmen Miranda visits Brazil after 14 years in the USA

Carmen holds Aracy de Almeida's face as if she treasured something dear from happier times while Almirante looks on and Paulo Machado de Carvalho holds her gently...

In a period less than one year - 9 months actually - the tragedy which became Carmen Miranda's life was reported almost daily in most Brazilian newspapers. Aurora Miranda decided to travel to California to try and bring her sister to Brazil to save her from a great depression that had set in and the US doctors didn't know how to deal with.

Here are some newspaper articles clipped from Rio de Janeiro's 'Correio da Manhã' from December 1954 through to August 1955, when Carmen Miranda dies in Hollywood - 5 August 1955 - and her body is flown down to Rio and is buried on 13 August 1955.

4 December 1954 - Saturday - Correio da Manhã's headlines was a total misconception of the drama Carmen Miranda was living.

2nd December 1954 - NBC news script from WBAP-TV, Fort Worth, Texas kept by University of North Texas tells of Carmen Miranda's stop-over in Dallas, Texas on her way to Brazil. Carmen was accompanied by her Mother & sister Aurora. She had a chance to talk to the press and be 'cheeky' as was her usually was.
